ELAA CEO, David Worland, comments in the AGE today following the announcement by Victorian Education Minister, James Merlino, that the fee subsidy payment of $485 per child introduced during term two to assist parents and services during the initial outbreak of COVID-19 will continue into term 3 but at a reduced rate of $230 per child. Additional payments for service cleaning costs are also being extended into the next term.

Should childcare in Victoria be free? Join ELAA CEO, David Worland, along with early childhood education academics and sector representatives, and the hosts of ABC Radio Melbourne's Conversation Hour for a discussion about whether or not childcare should be universally free to parents. The discussion was held just days after the Federal Government's decision to roll back free child care and re-introduce the Child Care Subsidy. On Monday, 8 June, the Federal Education Minister, Dan Tehan, announced that the Federal Government would be transitioning from the COVID-19 Child Care Relief package which essentially provided free childcare to families back to the Pre-COVID-19 Child Care Subsidy system (with some relaxation of the CCS Activity Test for a limited 12 week period during the transition phase). A cessation of JobKeeper payments for childcare workers was also announced to be replaced by a 'Transition payment' to services. ELAA CEO, David Worland was interviewed on 9 June by ABC Radio's Samantha Donovan regarding the sector's reaction to this announcement.
